I don't want religion shoved in my face and I'm someone's child, but I still have to be nice to the bible guys on 6th and Congress with their bullhorns and damnation.

Get a life, tex-in-the-closet. Unless you're gay, you don't have any reason to worry about how disgusting gay sex is to you or even think about it as much as you apparently do. 11-20-2008

Kiker / circle C resident by guest | hide/show
I am saddened by the attacks on Circle C and on our Kiker reps (these two women are very loving parents and incredibly giving people). The task force reps have been working on this complicated issue since May, 2008. Most are volunteers trying to see the big picture for all students. In July our Kiker Reps met with Mills and Clayton reps. and AGREED that all 3 schools should go to the new SWMS. The BOARD said that it was not feasible. It has been brought up again – and again it was not feasible. It has never been the intent of Circle C to single out another community or to “claim” this school as our own. Of course we started an email movement when we heard we would be split – so did other schools involved. Mills had boundary information on their PTA website, Legend Oaks on theirs.

We have focused on spreading information – not discord for/ with Mills or any other school. We are focused on the TASK FORCE main goals: 1. capacity of all schools; 2. stability: affect as few students / schools as possible; 3. distance, travel time & safety. Kiker meets all these goals. If Small MS lost all of its Mills students, their population numbers would drop to 66% capacity. This new school will help relieve overcrowding at Bailey & Paredes (Bailey continues to grow, not Small). If Mills, Kiker & Clayton attended the new school it would be at over capacity within 5 years. Clayton is a 3 year old school that is over crowded and stacked with portables!

Circle C is not some machine – we are all individuals with our own families, joys and hardships. We have NEVER said that we were better than anyone else – it has just been assumed. We do empathize with Mills parents – but we don’t deserve this slander. We would embrace all 3 elementary schools attending the new school if it were feasible. Some have said that Circle C residents would not welcome Mills kids. Wow – who do you think lives over here? I would hope that during these tenuous middle school years that all parents would help all fellow students thrive together – no matter where they come from. As for splitting everyone to – “share the pain” – we would be affecting more students instead of less. Wildflower, part of Circle C, would have to get onto Mopac to travel to either middle school but they ARE closest to the new school than to Bailey (their population #s are nominal). I wish the best for all the students – hoping by start of school next year, they will just be concerned with homework and new friends. 11-19-2008

It is all about balance by guest | hide/show
As was quite clear last night, the issue is all about school populations and everything else is secondary. As much as the three schools would like to go to SWMS, it is not possible, period. That option was taken off the table long ago by AISD, not by any neighborhood not wanting to work together.

If Bailey MS was dropping to 65% population with Kiker's departure (as opposed to Small dropping to 65% with Mills departure), Kiker would likely be splitting instead. 11-19-2008

How can we sympathize with a flighty, non-stop talking, sarcastic 30 year old giggler? The poor driving instructor was written like a cartoon villain--that was too easy and cheap. A terrible movie, made all the more irritating by the other rave reviews. 11-19-2008

"Your Postcard IV says that the idea of this country is that we all share the exact same rights in relationship to our government. Of course the relatively few who pay the majority of the taxes would be justified in wondering why that idea is not in practice. Why do they have less right to their own work product than someone who produces less?"

Work harder and smarter and get punished. 11-19-2008

I agree, it made fun of gays, mexicans, homeless people, objectified women, and was truly awful. I was disappointed and at times disgusted with the terrible stereotypes and blatant sexism. Sorry, but it sucked. 11-19-2008

To "Sheesh" - I agree with you to a point. Everyone should act like the grown-ups they are. But Kiker reps helped turn this into a "Circle C' thing when they refused to work together with Mills to find solutions that worked for all. The "every school for itself" attitude has just inflamed the situation.

If all 3 schools can't fit - then fine, but why is Mills the only school to be split? Why are the Kiker families East of Mopac going to the new middle school when they will still have to cross dangerous intersections to get to the new school? (Safety being one of the main issues as to why Kiker should go to the new school.)

If Kiker reps would step up and say "if we split Kiker a little bit, maybe we won't have to split Mills quite so much". Or if they bothered to come forward to present a united front WITH Mills or even indicated they cared one iota about Mills kids, this wouldn't have gotten so ugly.

It's the sense of entitlement exhibited by Kiker that I think angers people so much. They were not the only people to work to get the bond passed, they're not the only ones concerned about their child's safety. If the situations were reversed and most (if not all) plans called to split Kiker, but left all other schools whole, there would be the same level of anger and frustration.

Yes, Small needs to stay viable, but there are options to make this happen (Sunset Valley Elem and Cowan Elem are both interested ingoing to Small). But no one seems to want to listen to any solution that would allow MIlls to stay whole in middle school.

Unless all 3 schools go to the new school, no one will be completely happy. But if everyone had been willing to sacrifice a little or just work together, it might not have been so bad or gotten so ugly. 11-19-2008

It is an Austin middle school, that just happens to have tons of Circle C kids.

And there are lots of Circle C kids at Mills as well. Vintage Place, Circle C North, all go to Mills.

This is not a Circle C versus situation, it is the only way to divide the school up and give relief to Bailey Middle school. Small is a great middle school and it will remain so, I just wish grownups would have been able to manage this process.

I am embarrased by all the elementary schools parents and their scare tactics, it makes you wonder who are the kids, and who are the adults.

Let Circle C have THEIR School by guest | hide/show
I wish all the Mills parents would band together & go to Small. Let Circle C have THEIR school. We all were zoned for Small before, what if this new middle school had never been built? Who cares that we are closer to the new SWMS than they are, the Task Force obviously does not? Small is Recognized & is a great school. From the sentiments we've heard in some of these comments, I doubt Mills kids or Mills parents would ever feel truly welcome at the Circle C Middle School anyway.

The Circle C Education committee already has plans for what they want taught there. Would Mills parents even get a say? I'm sure AISD is going to have fun trying to fill all their requests.

We're going to run into the same issue when they build a new Circle C high school. 11-19-2008

where is the money coming from by Curious2 | hide/show
Who pays for all the children that women cannot afford? Do we pay because in most circumstances women cannot make the right decisions? Are we paying for someone elses mistakes? Do I work so that someone can later correct a mistake that they knew was going to be a mistake; just because they wanted to bring an unwanted child into an overpopulated world? Children abuse health care and this is coming from a child. YOU need to get it together and figure out whose pocket it's really coming out of.

Oh wait - I did and it's MINE, not YOURS. 11-19-2008

What's the deal leaving them out? Is there some agenda here? Has Home Slice violated some Austin coolness law? Maybe they aren't in a bad enough neighborhood to be considered good. I like some of the others you included, especially Salvation...which ranks right up there with Home Slice. I would be interested in hearing why people hate Home Slice so much. 11-19-2008

It is a fair proposal by Good job AISD ! | hide/show
I know some of the Mills people feel slighted, but honestly after attending the meeting it is the only solution. AISD has to keep all the Junior high schools viable, and if all of Mills were to go to the new SWMS it would make Smalls have too few students to carry on at a decent capacity.

The projected growth shows Bailey and Peredas Middle schools are the ones that need the relief and that is why all of Kiker and all of Clayton are going.

I am in support of whomever said the Kiker kids east of Mopac should stay at Bailey but since Bailey is in need of relief I understand the councils decision.

I think anyone whom is blaming this on Circle C, or Kiker, or Clayton or Mills is just not being reasonable. They did the best job they could for all the schools.

And at the end of the day, not one single kid will be harmed or care one way or another, this is all a bunch of Sound and Fury signifying nothing.

It is a fair proposal, and I am sorry that some of the Mills people feel slighted, but with the projected growth figures, it just makes sense.

At the end of the day, all the kids will still play sports together, and end up at Bowie, so calm down, and everyone go back to being good neighbors. 11-19-2008

I read Ms. Thornberry's story on Sugar Mama's Cupcake Shop and I thought I would give them a try - on my birthday no less; I was very disapointed. The cupcakes I had were tasteless, even the chocolate aka the James Brown had very little flavor. I adore lemon and thought the Jack's Lemon would be the one for me, not. The lemon flavor was non existant if you don't count the lemon exact used in the buttercream frosting. I say to you Ms. Thornberry, that if these were an example of what you experienced before writing this rave review your Foodie card should be shredded. 11-19-2008

This little gem deserves some scrutiny. Ok, so if people agree with you they are exciting? If they disagree with you, which I'm not even sure I was doing, then they are boring? I think you may have that backwards. 11-19-2008
