SONNY LANDRETH
Continental Club, Thursday, Aug 7

Mississippi-born Cajun dweller Sonny Landreth always struck me as Louisiana’s answer to A-Town’s Eric Johnson. On his latest slide-guitar slice ’n’ dice, From the Reach, you’ll find the aural resemblance in instrumentals such as chunkster “The Milky Way Home” and shredding, penulimate closer “Überesso.” Stealing thunder from Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago last year, Landreth remains a six-string überesso all his own. – Raoul Hernandez
FREEDY JOHNSTON
Momo's, Thursday, Aug 7

It’s been too long since Freedy’s been to Austin, but this week he makes up for it with two shows of dynamic Americana. At the Saxon on Tuesday, the current New York City resident is solo acoustic, the best way to hear his winsome vocals, while at Momo’s, he brings the band for a show that’s sure to rock, twang, and break some hearts. – Jim Caligiuri
BLACK COBRA/LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR
Red 7, Thursday, Aug 7

Two nights, two metal bands with requisite mythical-sounding animal names. SF duo Black Cobra took thrash to task on last year’s Feather and Stone (At a Loss), amping up the pummel factor with just guitar and drums. Fellow SFers Slough Feg open, with Sirhan Sirhan, Lions of Tsavo, and the Flood. Chicago’s Lair of the Minotaur hoof it up a notch on latest War Metal Battle Master (Southern Lord), a grinding “concept album” that’s screaming to be turned into a video game. Sourvein, Four Days to Burn, and Canyon of the Skull play first. – Audra Schroeder
NELLIE MCKAY
Stubb's, Thursday, Aug 7

You just want to pick her up and hug her!
